ES-E 500
Legally Speaking Special: English for the EU Context

Inhalt und Ziele

Communicating effectively in English within the EU environment can be challenging – not only because of the many languages and cultural backgrounds involved, but also due to the specific communication styles used in meetings, negotiations, and informal exchanges. Whether you are contributing to a formal committee discussion in Brussels or networking over coffee with colleagues from across Europe, the ability to express yourself clearly and appropriately is essential.

In this compact seminar, you will develop the skills and vocabulary you need to navigate both formal and informal settings in the EU context – building confidence for productive and culturally sensitive communication.

So let’s talk about …

  • typical formats and dynamics of EU meetings and working groups
  • useful expressions for chairing, presenting, and participating in discussions
  • diplomatic language for agreement, disagreement, and compromise
  • small talk and networking skills for informal occasions
  • strategies for active listening and clarification in multilingual settings

Learn how to deal with “classic” communication challenges …

  • choosing the right level of formality for your audience
  • using precise and neutral language in politically sensitive discussions
  • avoiding “false friends” and ambiguous phrases in intercultural communication

Essential phrases, e.g.:

  • Could we come back to that later?
  • May I suggest we rephrase this point?
  • Let’s see if we can find common ground on this.

Tricky terms, e.g.:

  • Difference between directive, regulation, and decision in EU contexts
  • Correct use of proposal vs. recommendation

When to use agenda vs. minutes correctly

… and boost your confidence in both official meetings and informal networking situations (which are most of the time as important or even more important than official meetings
