People with a working knowledge of English (CEFR levels B1/B2 and higher) who need to talk or write about legal issues in English and want to get it right.

Inhalt und Ziele

Speaking (or writing) about laws, regulations and other legal instruments is fundamental to your work in public administration? If this is equally true at home and in international contexts, it is worth taking a look at how best to do it in English.

So come and join us on “The Language of Law”. We will spend one morning talking about laws (in the broadest sense): how they relate to other laws, how they are structured, what they regulate, and how. We are going to explore …

• Key terminology and how to use it correctly:
  • Hierarchies of legal acts – and how to describe them
  • Is our “§” the same as English “paragraph”?
  • Can “statute” mean the same thing as “law”?
• Legal prepositions and essential phrases:
  • How does gemäß work in English? We can say “under” or “in accordance with” – but what about “according to”?
  • Does the law provide penalties – or does it provide for penalties?
  • Which can a law confer – a right or an obligation? And which can it impose?
• Talking about laws of interest to YOU:
  • Bring your favourite legal act (be it Austrian or European, an Act of Parliament, a regulation or an international agreement) so you can practise talking about it – with a safety net.

• Interactive seminar with group work and lots of speaking practice
• Integrated approach to vocabulary building and communication skills
